Hello! My name is Andrew Nguyen, but everyone calls me Andy. I am nine years old. I started getting interested in RC planes when I saw my brother flying them at the flying field. It looked really cool watching the planes go up in the sky and do tricks.
I also went to the RC Fest and saw lots of people flying amazing planes. Some planes did looping and flew upside-down, and some even dropped smoke while flying. At night, there were glowing planes flying while fireworks were shooting in the sky, which looked awesome. One of my favorite things was when two pilots flew the same exact planes and did the same maneuvers together at the same time. Seeing all those cool planes made me really want to learn how to fly RC planes too.
One reason I like RC planes is because flying them at the field is really fun. I fly at the Champaign County Radio Control Club (CCRCC) flying field in Illinois, and it feels a little like playing a video game but in real life. The RC plane controller is kind of like a video game controller, but instead of looking at a screen, you are actually looking at your real plane in the sky and controlling it. Sometimes you can use something called a buddy box, which means two people can control the same plane. An instructor can help you learn while you are flying so you don’t crash. It is fun to fly with other people and learn new things about how the planes work.
Another thing I like is building model airplanes. Building planes helps me learn how RC planes actually work. There are many parts like motors, servos, wires, and batteries that all have to work together to make the plane fly. Sometimes you can even add cool things like LED lights by soldering wires together and attaching them to the plane. Building planes can be hard, but it gives you good hands-on experience. You also learn to be patient and keep trying when something is hard. When you finish building a plane and it works, you feel really satisfied and happy.
Before flying real planes, I also like to practice on a simulator. A simulator lets me practice hard things like looping without worrying about
crashing. If I crash in the simulator, I can just try again. There are also many different planes to practice with. The simulator has helpful features, like zooming in on the plane, so it is easier to see. You can even practice landing in a small spot on the simulator field with different modes. Practicing on the simulator helps me learn flying skills and makes me feel more confident when I fly a real plane at the field.
In conclusion, I really enjoy RC planes because there are so many fun things to do, like flying, building, and practicing on simulators. Watching the pilots at RC Fest makes me want to start flying, and every time I fly or build a plane, I learn something new. I hope that by practicing and working hard, I can become a really good RC pilot someday.
